Primavera by Sandro Botticelli is an iconic piece of Italian art. Painted around 1480, it was part of a decorative cycle of the Medici Villa in Castello; today it is kept in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It represents an allegory of Spring, to be read from right to left. The main characters are the Spring recognizable for the floral dress, the goddess Venus at the center of the scene on which her son Cupid flies. The three Graces, companions of Venus are engaged in a dance, while the god Mercury chases away the clouds with his staff, the Caduceus . Some scholars have recognized the features of Simonetta Vespucci in the face of Spring; considered one of the most fascinating women of the Renaissance, she died very young at the age of 23.
